The New England Region saw the Tamworth Come and Try day run very successfully with participants able to try wheelchair basketball, hand cycling and tennis. Our North West members will soon have the addition of 10 new Basketball chairs in Armidale, to be stored out of the University. This will allow greater access to a variety of sports for our members across the New England region.
The Northern Shootout is well underway with the first round being held out of Coffs Harbour in March. A total of 16 participants were involved from regions across the state including Coffs Harbour, Lismore and Newcastle. Be sure to talk to your regional coordinator to find out when the Northern Shootout is coming to you.
The Hunter experienced another installment of the Hunter Disability Sports Expo held at The Forum. Attendee’s were able to try 8 different sports on the day with the assistance of current members representing their respective sports. With the help of the Cauliflower Club as the major sponsor, the day was a great success. We are already looking forward to the 2019 Hunter Expo!
If you are a Northern region member and have an event or news to share feel free to get in contact with me. I am enjoying my role with Wheelchair Sports NSW and learning all things wheelchair sport and always love to hear about the membership in action. I can be contacted by northern members for anything Wheelchair Sport NSW related via email at firstname.lastname@example.org or 0439 743 777.

There has been plenty of member activity through autumn and also lots of planning for the rest of 2018 going on behind the scenes.
The 2018 Southern Shootout continued through the autumn months with events in Shellharbour (March), Young (April) and Wagga Wagga (May). Attendances have been strong an average of over 30 players at each basketball afternoon. It has been especially great to see both of our southern border programs represented strongly this year as well as individual members whose regions don’t have a full team competing, still travelling to join in the fun. The Shootout will take a winter break and be back in Canberra in September.
While on basketball, a reminder that registrations for the Country Cup at Narrabeen are now open and I encourage all members in the southern regions to get along to this great weekend of wheelchair basketball and socialising in August. Registrations for the Top End Slam Down Under and Top End Masters events will also open soon. Keep an eye on your email and the WS NSW Facebook page for details.
In March, The Vikings Group Canberra Classic featured the countries best up and coming rugby players across 3 days of competition at Southern Cross Stadium in Tuggeranong. Players were placed into teams for the Friday and Saturday before being re-allocated to new teams for Sunday’s games. This was a great chance for players from across Australia to play with and against other national team hopefuls. Thanks to Vikings Group for jumping on board as naming rights sponsor.
The WS NSW ParaPawer Championships will be held at Woonona Bulli RSL on Sunday June 17. They say the iron never lies and this will be the chance for all members to test their strength. This is the next step on our powerlifting program journey with weigh-ins from 10.00am and athletes competing in weight divisions with accredited officials to judge the lifts. There is no entry fee and all members are welcome to attend and have a go. While the lifting for this championship event starts at 1.00pm, there is also a chance for an introduction/Come ‘n’ Try/social lifting from 10.00am. Check out our website and Facebook for more details and entry forms. Spectators are also welcome.
Finally, the State Singles and Pairs Lawn Bowls Championships will return to Milton-Ulladulla Bowling Club in early September. This will be the third year MUBC have hosted us and I’m sure this year will be just as fun and competitive as the previous two. Stay tuned for entry details on our website and Facebook.
If you want an event in any of our sports planned for your region drop me a line. As always I would love to hear about the fantastic things you have been doing and see some photos. I am available to southern members with anything Wheelchair Sport NSW related via email at email@example.com or phone 0438 125 593.
