Illawarra have once again claimed a Country Cup title after being undefeated throughout the 2014 tournament!
The 2014 Country Cup was held from July 18th – 20th at the Sydney Academy of Sport, Narrabeen. Eight teams competed in the social, development tournament with entries from Campbelltown, Coffs Harbour (x2), Country Cannons (Dubbo), Illawarra, NSW Juniors and Sutherland.
Despite the cold conditions all players took to the courts, eager to improve their skills and compete against regional rivals. There were several new players who competed in a wheelchair basketball competition for their first time and received encouragement and feedback from other players and coaches. It was a fun weekend that showcased sportsmanship and emerging talent with all teams improving over the weekend.
Illawarra played off against Campbelltown in semi-final 1 with Campbelltown putting up a good fight. In semi-final 2, the NSW Juniors played their best match of the tournament and stepped up to take a win over Coffs Harbour 1 who had defeated them earlier that morning. After a long weekend of matches the NSW Juniors appeared tired from back to back games and Illawarra proved too strong, comfortably taking out the 2014 Country Cup.
Thank you to all the referees who assisted throughout the weekend and to the teams who travelled considerable distances to attend the event.
