Over 50 players competed for the 2016 Country Cup title. This 50 was mostly made up of regional Wheelchair Sports NSW (WS NSW) members. We were also joined by the Men’s U23 wheelchair basketball team from New Zealand.
Across the weekend we witnessed impressive wheelchair basketball and as always sportsman from all involved. Lots of new faces attended this year including 3 regional junior WS NSW members. On Saturday night regional coordinators and members gathered to have a discussion on a range of regional topics. It was also a chance to look back on what has been achieved by the two Regional Sports Development Officers since the beginning of the Building Stronger Regions project.
The Illawarra Eagles, New Zealand U23’s, Coffs Coast and the Canberra Chargers were the top 4 heading into semi-finals. New Zealand and Illawarra won their semi-finals to book a spot in the gold medal game. The Coffs Coast team took out the bronze medal with a close 36 – 33 win over the Canberra Chargers.
Our friends from New Zealand won the gold medal match 33 – 27 over the Illawarra Eagles but as they are not a NSW team they cannot win the Country Cup title. The title stays with the Illawarra for another year!
